Surprising no one more than himself, Sherlock actually did manage to fall asleep the first night of John's return. They'd gotten in from dinner and showing John around the city late enough that Shinichi had already gone to bed, and woke up after he'd gone to school, so it's nearly a full day later that Sherlock finally has the opportunity to (re)introduce them.
It had been hard for Sherlock to determine how Shinichi had taken John's release -- he'd been a little preoccupied with his own grief, and staving off his looming relapse under Irene's careful watch -- but he's seemed a bit quiet since, and Sherlock is only a little bit loath to admit that he hopes John's return will cheer Shinichi up too.
Of course, Sherlock is still Sherlock, and there's very little preamble when the two of them are finally in the same place at the same time and he waves in Shinichi's direction, saying, "John, that's Shinichi." There, all taken care of.
